This ice cream is AMAZING!!! I am not dairy-free, but with my husband being lactose intolerant, I try to make most of our meals dairy-free (or easy to make dairy free for him). That said, this ice-cream is amazing. I don’t feel like I am deprived of anything! The texture and taste is spot on :) The coconut milk provides a rich and creamy texture that is sure to have you wanting more. The coconut milk is full of healthy fats to help you staying satisfied. The raw cacao has lots of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fiber. The raw honey adds just enough sweetness to tame the bitter cacao. This dessert is simple, delicious, and healthy. What’s more? The 3 ingredients used for this ice cream is 100% shelf stable – which is great for long term food storage. That’s right! This is a healthy food storage dessert that the whole family can enjoy (unless you are under 1 years old – then stay away from the raw honey!)

Coconut Chocolate Ice Cream

Ingredients:

2 cans coconut milk (15 oz each)

1/4 cup raw cacao

1/4 cup raw honey

Instructions:

1) Blend all ingredients together in a blender.

2) Pour in ice cream maker (follow the instructions for the specific ice cream machine you are using).

Enjoy! :)

Creating a Home Gym on a Budget http://www.skinnytwinkie.com/2015/04/creating-a-home-gym-on-a-budget/ Mon, 13 Apr 2015 11:00:44 +0000 http://www.skinnytwinkie.com/?p=8622

Many of us think having a home gym would be nice in theory, but how could we possibly afford it? With car payments, a mortgage, the cost of having and raising children, and so on, there’s no room in our budgets for something frivolous like a home gym, right? Better to just stick with a gym membership.

We’ve labored under the pretense that home gyms are outside the realm of possibility due to budgetary constraints, so we continue paying upward of $40 a month (per person) in order to workout at the gym a couple days a week when our schedules allow. And those CrossFit programs that have become popular lately can cost over $100 a month for a single person. What is a gym membership costing $500 or more per person annually was actually the more expensive route?

Image_001

Via Breaking Muscle

Creating an affordable home gym is not only possible, it’s actually pretty simple. In addition to being kinder to your wallet, there are also benefits to having a home gym versus a gym membership. Here’s how you can have a home gym of your own without breaking the bank.

Designated Gym Space

The first thing you need when creating a home gym is space. Especially for those with kids, having a space where you can close the door and shut out the distractions and interruptions is going to make your workouts more successful and effective. And if you’re the type of person who enjoys going to the gym, the feeling of working out in a space that’s separate from your home and your living space, this is another reason why having a space specifically for your workout equipment will be beneficial to you.

Image_002

Via Decoist

You might not have a spare room that you can devote to exercise and fitness alone. If you have a home office or guest bedroom, these are spaces where you could incorporate your workout equipment without losing your work space or accommodations for guests and still have an area where you can workout in solitude. It’s also worth considering areas like the basement, attic, or garage as these are spaces that are somewhat separate from your home’s living space by default and are often unused for anything but storage.

The Essentials

Once you have your gym space, it’s time to start collecting the essentials. The great thing about having your own home gym is that you decide what equipment you will include since you know what types of exercises and workouts you prefer or need. If you tend to lift more weights and do more strength training than you use equipment like stationary bikes, treadmills, and ellipticals, then you’ll want to invest more of your budget on equipment for strength training.

Image_003

Via Decoist

However, your body will change over time as you workout regularly; if you start out focusing on cardio, you might get to a point where you begin needing less cardio and transition to a regimen that focuses on strength training, which is why it’s also a good idea to have some of both types of equipment. Home gym basics for strength training include things like weight and balance balls, resistance bands, free weights, and dumbbells. It’s also a good idea to invest in an adjustable bench that will help you to do a variety of workouts using weights to target a greater variety of muscle groups on your body. Most of these types of items aren’t very expensive and can often be purchased used via sale ads in newspapers and online.

Image_004

Via Decoist

As for cardio equipment, which machines you choose and how many you decide to get are entirely up to you based on your individual preferences. It’s good to have at least one cardio machine like a treadmill so you can include some cardio in your workouts, but if you happen to prefer cardio to strength training you may want to have one or two other machines. Although machines like treadmills and ellipticals will likely comprise the majority of your home gym budget, this equipment has come down in price a lot in recent years. What’s more, you can buy a mid-range cardio machine for far less than your annual gym membership dues, which is makes creating a home gym more attractive because it’ll pay for itself with just a year or two of your gym membership savings.

Why You Should Have Fermented Cod Liver Oil Every Day http://www.skinnytwinkie.com/2015/02/why-you-should-have-fermented-cod-liver-oil-every-day/ Mon, 23 Feb 2015 12:00:34 +0000 http://www.skinnytwinkie.com/?p=8545

fermented cod liver oil

You may have heard about fermented cod liver oil, but you may not know about the many health benefits that are associated with this superfood. Yes, a superfood! I don’t like to throw that word around, but when it comes to fermented cod liver oil, “superfood” is the best way to describe this stuff. Well, that and the fact that it tastes pretty nasty, but let’s first talk about the benefits, shall we? ;)

Why Fermented Cod Liver Oil?

Why not eat plant sources that contain vitamin A? Well, still eat those, of course! But I prefer to get my vitamin A through fermented cod liver oil for several reasons:

Fermented cod liver oil is one of the best (highly concentrated) sources of vitamins A and D, which are both need to assimilate minerals and other vitamins in the body. In just 1 teaspoon of fermented cod liver oil, you’ll get the vitamin A and D that your body needs (see recommended amounts below)

Since fermented cod liver oil is a natural fat, this helps the fat-soluble vitamins A and D become better absorbed (and therefore used) in the body.

Fruits and vegetables contain carotenes, which is not a true form of vitamin A. In order to create vitamin A, the carotenes go through a complicated enzymatic process in the small intestine, resulting in small amounts of vitamin A. Many lack the enzymes needed to convert carotenes into vitamin A in the body, including babies and young children, those who have diabetes, thyroid problems, and digestive issues.

Cod Liver Oil versus Fermented Cod Liver Oil

First, let’s talk about cod liver oil, and briefly discuss how it is made when compared to fermented cod liver oil.

When creating cod liver oil, most manufactures extract the healthy oils with extremely high heat, which ruins the natural vitamins in it. Because of this, companies will add synthetic vitamins A and D to the cod liver oil.

Fermented cod liver oil, however, is different. It takes 6-12 months to make, using traditional fermentation methods that preserves the natural nutrient content and helps make the oil much more bio-available to your body.

Health Benefits of Fermented Cod Liver Oil

If you want to boost your immune system, fermented cod liver oil is the way to go! Fermented cod liver oil helps with the following:

• Prevents diseases and if you do get sick, you’ll recover quicker!

• Supports bone health, including your teeth.

• Helps promote healthy cholesterol levels.

• Promotes mental health (prevents degenerative mental diseases) and may help stabilize mood disorders such as depression and bi-polar

• Helps manage asthma symptoms

• Reduces inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema and acne.

• Helps manage the symptoms of ADHD.

• Promotes healthy hair, nails, and skin.

• Helps provide healthy hormone balance

• May reduce the symptoms from arthritis

How to Take Your Fermented Cod Liver Oil

You can buy fermented cod liver oil in capsule or liquid form. Capsule form is usually more expensive, but you don’t have to taste the fermented cod liver oil! If you can afford it in capsule form, it’s the way to go! However, I am currently finding ways to get my fermented cod liver oil in through liquid form.

Let’s be real: fermented cod liver oil is some pretty nasty stuff! However, because of the amazing health benefits associated with fermented cod liver oil, I choose to take it anyways. That said, how do you get little kids to take it, when they just don’t care about the long list of health benefits? Depending on the age, there are some things you can do.

Juice – This works for my 2 year old daughter. I normally don’t give her juice, but I have found that when I add fermented cod liver oil to her juice, she drinks it right up!

Smoothie – Make yourself a smoothie and add your fermented cod liver oil in it.

Chase it! – Go ahead and quickly drink the fermented cod liver oil and then “chase it down” with water, juice, kefir, or raw milk!

Mix it – If I want to mask the flavor, I’ll put juice or smoothie in a shot glass with the fermented cod liver oil and quickly drink it and have it done and over with. This is my preferred method. Find what works for you!

Recommended Dosages

Children (3 months  – 12 years)

1/8 tsp –  1/2 tsp or 1-4 capsules (0.625 – 2.5 ml)

Adults (and children 12 years up)

1/2 tsp – 1 tsp or 5-10 capsules (2.5 – 5 ml)

Pregnant and nursing women

1-2 tsp or 10-20 capsules (5-10 ml)

Please Share!

Do you already take fermented cod liver oil? If so, please share with us your story, tips, and suggestions! Thank you!

By Jennifer Kelly Geddes for Discover and Play

Whether you’re keeping your New Year’s resolution to get fit or simply continuing a healthy workout routine, running in cold weather can be a challenge. Lacing up when the temperature dips takes determination — and some good advice for braving the elements. Before dashing out the door, consider the following winter running tips:

Pregame: Warming up your muscles is even more important in winter than in nicer weather, so don’t skip this step. Be sure to take the time to run in place inside your house, do a few downward dogs or perform jumping jacks. Prepping your body ahead of time will help you feel less cold when you head out to run.

Wicked Wind: A blast of arctic air can send even the most resolute runner scurrying home. To protect yourself from the wind, slather on lip balm, cover fragile skin with a light layer of Vaseline and wear a facemask. And when you start, head into the wind first and then finish with it behind you so it doesn’t blow right in your face after you’ve begun to sweat.

Ice, Ice Baby: Slippery patches are a runner’s worst nightmare, so take extra caution in these conditions. You might consider grips for the bottoms of your sneakers for better leverage, or you could shorten your stride for improved footing. Also, choose the clearest path possible, like a well-shoveled sidewalk rather than a snowy park path.

Drink Up: It may be the last thing you think of when it’s cold out, but downing H2O is critical during winter. It’s easy to become dehydrated this time of year because sweat dries quickly and you may not feel as warm. Pack a small bottle and take sips if your run is longer than 45 minutes.

When you think of comfort foods, what pops up in your mind? Pizza, pasta, ice cream and cookies? We eat comfort foods in times of stress, but these foods we consume tends to increase our stress levels and hunger even more. With all that said, what if I was able to convince you to redefine your definition of comfort foods from a health standpoint? What if you could envision comfort foods as  a way  to lower general stress and make you feel balanced, calm and energized, all without the ingredients being detrimental to your health?

I obviously cannot do that within one article, but learning what foods and nutrients can provide you the constant energy release to keep blood sugar levels stable, fatigue decreased, and mood stable, is a start!

When we are stressed, our cortisol levels increase which triggers  a conglomerate of negative side effects including junk food and carb cravings, or “comfort food” cravings as many would say. If you are looking for ways to lower cortisol levels with the help of nutrition, then read on!

Folate
Folate is one nutrient that helps fight depression, lowers blood pressure, and is also an essential vitamin for expectant mothers. Eating a plant-based diet can increase your folate intake, since this vitamin is found in many fruits and vegetables. Foods like asparagus, avocado, lentils, and citrus foods all contain folate.

Complex Carbs
Don’t discount carbs when it comes to weight loss or diets. In fact, I myself feel like I am my slimmest when I have complex carbs in the evening. Carbs like quinoa and brown rice will keep you feeling balanced and stabilized by keeping blood sugar levels neutral and stimulating the right hormones in our brains.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is one nutrient that can help cut cortisol levels to combat stress. Not only does your citrus fruits improve your immune system, it will help keep your mind at ease as well. Include oranges and berries in with your daily smoothies to get a boost of this stress busting vitamin.

Niacin
Studies show that niacin helps decrease anxiety and depression, as well as aiding proper sleeping patterns. Foods high in niacin include: almonds, dark leafy greens, mushrooms, salmon or tuna, sunflower seeds, and rice.

Even though I shared just a sliver of the food sources to lower stress, I’m hoping you have an idea of how these vitamins and minerals can keep your body healthy and a smile on your face. Next is to figure out ways to combine these foods to make meals that will satisfy both your tummy, and your brain.

– The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care ($17.06) – This book is based on the original Nourishing Traditions book, but with the main focus on pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and post-pregnancy diet. Also talks about the best foods for your little ones – explaining why rice should never be your baby’s first food. This is a must for any parent or parent-to-be.

– Eat Fat, Lose Fat ($11.49) – This is another great book based on the original Nourishing Traditions book, but primarily geared towards those looking to lose weight. You’ll learn about how to make your own kefir, sourdough bread, bone broth, and more.

It’s easy to indulge in not-so-healthy foods during the holidays. I get it. We can’t eat perfectly all of the time, so here are some strategies to help you detox after the holidays.

Reduce Bloating

BREAKFAST: Eat Oatmeal for Breakfast with a little bit of peanut butter. This is a bit of a diuretic, which helps you remove excess water from the body and kidneys. This will help you feel better on the inside and the outside!

THROUGHOUT THE DAY: Blend together:  3 cups of melon (any melon), 2 cups of water and 1 cup of coconut water. Drink this throughout the day to help flush excess sodium out of your body, which reduces stomach bloating.

Rebalance Blood Sugar

LUNCH: Enjoy lentil soup for lunch to give your body a break from all of the very high-glycemic foods and beverages that are enjoyed during the holidays! This is a low-glycemic meal that helps to balance out your blood sugar levels.

Remove Fat Toxins

DINNER: Enjoy a protein packed cabbage salad: 2 cups purple cabbage, 1 chicken breast, 1 oz pumpkin seeds, 1 orange, 3 tsp olive oil. Cabbage is insoluble fiber to help your bowel movements stay regular and help you release those toxins from your body. This  meal will help you remove the fat promoting toxins that are in your body.Recharge Your Metabolism

THROUGHOUT THE DAY: Chocolate tea. It’s a way for you to enjoy a sweet drink without a lot of calories. Downside? It has caffeine in it. Not a huge fan of this suggestion from Doctor Oz.

This information is based on the Holiday Detox by Doctor Oz.

Holiday-Detox

BONUS TIP: Exercise! Continue to enjoy regular exercise throughout the holiday season to prevent weight gain – maybe even lose excess weight during the holidays! :)

Coconut Oil for Beauty

You’ve probably heard it a million times. Coconut oil helps you lose weight. I’m sure you’ve wondered how 120 calories per tablespoon of saturated fat can help you lose weight. No worries, let me explain…

Why Coconut Oil?

In 1998, Researchers at McGill University found that MCFA’s (the main type of fat found in coconut oil) actually use up energy when metabolized. The amount of energy used by the body to oxidize them is greater than the amount of energy they provide. Coconut oil has a thermogenic effect, which means that it raises the body’s temperature, which boosts your energy levels and metabolic rate.  Simply put, coconut oil acts as a weight loss agent by helping you burn more calories throughout the day!

How To Use Coconut Oil For Weight Loss

One of the best ways for you to reach your ideal body weight is to take coconut oil 20 minutes before each meal. Coconut oil provides a satiation effect, which helps prevent you from overeating with each meal. It also helps you absorb the nutrients from the foods you eat, which helps prevent cravings – another powerful tool in helping you lose weight and keep it off.

An easy way for you to take coconut oil before each meal would be through drinking it! Add coconut oil to some warm herbal tea 20 minutes before each meal.

• If you weigh 90-130 pounds, take 1 tablespoon coconut oil before each meal – (3 tablespoons total per day)

• If you weigh 131-180 pounds, take 1 1/2 tablespoons coconut oil before each meal – (4 1/2 tablespoons total per day)

• If you weigh over 180 pounds, take 2 tablespoons coconut oil before each meal – (6 tablespoons total per day)

If you aren’t used to eating a lot of coconut oil or a lot of fat in your diet, you may need to work up to these amounts. You can start with a 1/2 tablespoon per meal and work your way up to the recommended amounts. If you still have problems digesting fats (feeling sick to the stomach), you may want to consider taking “Bitters”, which is herbal extracts of mineral-rich herbs that naturally stimulate bile and increase digestion and assimilation of fats.

Did you know that the average woman who wears makeup puts on roughly 100 toxic ingredients on their face every day? WOAH. That’s a lot of toxic ingredients going on your skin!

Many of those toxins are linked to hormone disruption and even cancer. Not worth it.

That’s why I buy NATURAL makeup. It took me a long time to find natural makeup that looks great on me. No, it’s not gonna make me look like a super model – and that’s OK. It helps me be the best version of ME. :)

I use mascara by @josiemarancosmetics and my concealer, tinted moisturizer, powder, and eye shadows are from @100percentpure. My lip balm is organic peppermint by Dr. Bronner’s.

Every Fall and Winter I increase my garlic intake because it is one of the best ways to boost your immune system to prevent sickness – and if you’re already sick – it’s one of the best ways to quickly recover and feel better!

I’ll make homemade pesto or spaghetti and use a lot of garlic (but not so much that you don’t like the meal!) or I do “garlic shots” by mincing raw garlic and putting it in a shot glass or small cup with water and drink it quickly! It’s a quick and easy way to consume raw garlic without having to eat or taste it!

I was surprised that my daughter LOVED plain yogurt! It took ME a while to get used to the taste (compared to the flavored variety), but she loved it from the start!

Ditch the sugary yogurt or processed cereals and start giving yourself and family REAL food!!!

PS- organic whole milk PLAIN yogurt (or as my daughter likes to call it “Yo Yo!”) is a great way to get healthy probiotics in your body to improve your gut health. This is necessary – especially if you’ve had antibiotics!

Happy healing my friends!!! :)

-Provides plenty of reasons why your body NEEDS fat – and plenty of it, too.

-Explains why healthy fats WON’T make you fat. In fact, it will explain why it will help you LOSE fat – and keep it off!

-I’ll discuss how I have personally benefited from increasing the amount of healthy fats into my diet. Let’s just say I have been pleasantly surprised :)

FYI – I bought the book, “Eat Fat, Lose Fat” for myself…no sponsorship here! These are my own thoughts and opinions of the book :)

Why Swimming Is Good For Your Overall Heart Health http://www.skinnytwinkie.com/2014/09/why-swimming-is-good-for-your-overall-heart-health/ Thu, 04 Sep 2014 11:00:43 +0000 http://www.skinnytwinkie.com/?p=8445

Swimming

Bottom line, any type of exercise is good for your heart, because moving your muscles makes your number one muscle, your heart, work harder as it pumps blood. This increased workload strengthens your heart, which improves resting heart rate, blood pressure and overall health. So we know that swimming is good for your heart. But how good is it compared to other popular forms of exercise, like walking and running? Here are just a few links that scratch the surface of the benefits of swimming for your overall health:

Swimming: Joint Friendly and Good for the Heart

Heart Health & Swimming Pools

Why Swimming is So Good for You

A recent study by the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas, tells more of the story. In the study, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and maximum energy output, among other things, were compared across 46,000 people in four groups: swimmers, runners, walkers and non-exercisers (we’ll call them “sitters”). The group with the highest (best) numbers: Runners and swimmers, followed closely by walkers. I think we all know where the sitters placed: on the couch, in last place.

Like any other aerobic exercise, swimming works the heart and lungs, which lowers both breathing rate and resting heart rate, as well as trains the body to maximize oxygen usage. But there is another upside besides being heart-healthy: the meditative nature of swimming also serves as a mind relaxer and stress-reducer. Swimming laps, due to the repetitive nature of the exercise, and lack of safety concerns like traffic, equipment, etc., allows one to rely very heavily on muscle memory to get the job done. Many swimmers report the feeling of an almost hypnotic state—with no worries about another cyclist or a car cutting you off, or slick roads and puddles.

Just Like Riding a Bike

The great thing about swimming is that you are never too old to learn. Because swimming is such a low-impact exercise, and gentle on the joints and muscles, it can be learned (or re-learned) at any age. For older folks, start slowly: Warm up by treading water for five minutes, and then try ten or fifteen minutes of gentle lap swimming. Don’t forget to try a variety of strokes: breast, back, freestyle, etc., to find the one that is best for you. Over the course of several weeks, you will notice that you can swim for increasingly longer amounts of time without feeling tired.

No Time Like the Present

There is no optimum age for learning to swim. If you are an adult who doesn’t know how to swim, or needs formal lessons to brush up on your strokes or improve your technique, inquire at your local health club, gym or community pool. If you have a backyard pool of your own and want to receive instruction in the privacy of your own backyard, put a call into your local high school’s swim coach to find out about students who might want to make some extra money doing swim instruction on the weekends. Finally, personal trainers employed by gyms are often available to work outside of their job site for a fee.

Keep Challenging Yourself

Once you get the hang of it as an exercise routine, you’ll want to increase your number of laps and aim for approximately 20 to 30 minutes at an even pace, as long as you are keeping your heart rate up. Keep in mind that unlike running or other land-based aerobic activities, swimming places less burden on your heart, which means that your maximum target heart rate will not be as high. Typically, your target heart rate while swimming will be 10 to 20 beats per minute lower than other forms of exercise.

For an exercise routine that is both low-impact/joint friendly, and a great overall workout for your heart and general wellbeing, consider swimming. Your heart will thank you!

I love chocolate pudding and this year I found some amazing recipes online that I wanted to try. I played around with the different ingredients and found that I love this recipe that I have created!

This recipe is loaded with lots of healthy fat that keeps you full longer, reduces sugar cravings, and helps you absorb the nutrients from the food that you are eating (avocados are seriously one of the ‘perfect’ foods out there, don’t you think?!). You can use raw milk instead of coconut milk…but I personally prefer the coconut milk!

Vegan Chocolate Pudding

Ingredients:
12 oz coconut milk (put in fridge to cool and thicken to desired consistency)
1 ripe avocado
2 tablespoons raw cacoa
3-6 tablespoons coconut sugar or pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla bean powder – This ingredients is a must in my humble opinion ;)
coconut flakes or more vanilla bean powder for garnish.

Directions: Mix it all in a blender and ENJOY! :D

This is a must-see video, especially for parents. Kids can be picky eaters, but that doesn’t mean we allow them to eat whatever junk food that they want. Why? Because eating habits start at a young age. And when it comes to your kid’s eating habits, it can be the difference between life and death someday. Seriously.

Coconut Cookies

Coconut Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

  • ⅓ cup coconut flour
  • ¼ cup coconut oil, melted
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (I use vanilla bean powder rather than the extract!)

Exerciser_happy

Everyone can name few benefits of regular exercise. Even children could tell you that exercise reduces your weight. Many adults would tell you that one of the chief benefits of exercise is that it lowers your blood pressure & minimizes cholesterol levels. Most people just relate fitness with being able to wear bikini or just looking better,  overall.

Listed below are 10 health benefits of exercise that may be a little lesser known:

1. Lifting weight will reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis. It would also enhance your core strength as well as balance, that means less risk of falling. Studies show that weight training might increase bone mineral density up-to 13% in under 6 months.

2. Exercise will assist in reducing symptoms of depression. While you exercise, your body tends to release feel good hormones known as Endorphins. They help you to get pass the feelings of worry and dread. Also, after you complete your daily workout routine you’re rewarded with a feeling of accomplishment, which has been shown to help fight depression.

3. Exercise boosts testosterone proportions naturally. No pills required! Regular training ranging from 45-60 minutes per session along-with multi-joint movements will cause an improved levels of testosterone by as much as forty percent.

4. It reduces headaches! Several people who suffer from migraines have reported a drop in the frequency and intensity of their headaches. Exercise not only minimizes anxiety & muscle tension but also increases lymph and blood circulation.

5. It provides you energy. There are hundreds of researches on such subject & they all provide you with the same thing – activity minimizes fatigue.

6. Increased muscle mass speeds up the metabolism rate, which means you’ll burn extra fat, even while hardly doing anything! When you gain 10 pounds of extra muscle, you’ll kill additional 500 calories per day. Muscle burns a minimum of 90% extra calories than fat.

7. Exercise can also enhance your brain function. First, exercise causes your brain to release a nourishing protein known as neurotrophic factor. Also, exercise helps you to build better lines between brain cells. Scientist now finally think that daily exercise boosts the production of cells inside your hippo-campus. This area of your brain is responsible for memory & learning.

8. Muscle cells during your exercise utilize more sugar and oxygen than when they are at rest. This helps you to control your blood glucose. Also insulin is able to function better.

9. Exercise helps to avoid joint injuries and arthritis. This is pretty easy. When an individual weigh less, they naturally will put less stress onto their joints. Hence their chances for injury is not as much as one person who’s is obese.

10. Regular exercise helps you heal quicker from surgery or an illness.
