Posted by on Sep 23, 2013 in Nutrition | Comments Off on What is Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)?

Monosodium Glutamate, or MSG, became super popular because it enhances the flavor of processed foods. It makes food smell and taste better, you know, more like actual food. Unfortunately, MSG is very bad for your health, and I can only hope that after learning more about the harmful effects it has on your body, you will agree that the “because it tastes good” excuse just doesn’t cut it anymore. What is the Paleo Diet?

Posted by on Aug 12, 2013 in Nutrition, Weight Loss | Comments Off on What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet Most nutrition enthusiasts know that cutting grains, dairy, processed foods, sugar, and more out of your diet will, most likely, lead to weight loss. This is the goal of many diets. Would it surprise you if the Paleo Diet claimed to do this too? Or, perhaps you wonder if the Paleo Diet does it in a more, or less, healthy way than other diets? Read on to find out! The Paleo Diet Menu Let us begin by describing the diet. First, the Paleo Diet has a rather strict menu; not so much portion control, as much as restricting what you are actually allowed to consume. The diet is based on the foods that could be hunted, fished, and gathered during the Paleolithic era. We don’t live in the Paleolithic era, so, in case you were wondering...

Pros and Cons of Juicing

Posted by on Jul 22, 2013 in Nutrition | 2 comments

There has been a lot of hype lately about making your own vegetable and/or fruit juice, and I think it is time I finally discuss the pros and cons of juicing with you. Pros of Juicing There are a lot of pros to juicing, but let’s discuss some of the highlights: • You will be able to consume a lot more vegetables and/or fruits in a day. For my friends who have started to juice, I hear the same comment over and over again “I’ve never eaten so much vegetables/fruit in my life!”. Such a great thing to hear! • Fast and easy way to eat your vegetables and/or fruit! • Encourages you to eat your vegetables RAW – which has many health benefits! Cooked veggies still have their benefits, but many would argue that eating raw veggies is...

Where does food come from?

Posted by on Apr 15, 2013 in Nutrition | Comments Off on Where does food come from?

I am writing this article based on a conversation I had with my husband a few weeks ago. I told him that avocados were a fruit (he thought they were a vegetable. Common mistake!) and that they grown on a tree. He didn’t believe me on both accounts! We finally did an internet search and I was able to prove my point. Of course, it’s not about being right…it’s about knowing where your food comes from! :) Do you know where your food comes from? What about your kids? First, check out this video from Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution: Wow. Pretty shocking, right? These kids don’t know what a tomato is, but they know about “tomato ketchup”! Just make sure everyone knows what a tomato plant looks like, here’s one for you: For your sake (and your kids if...

Food Dyes: Are they Safe?

Posted by on Mar 25, 2013 in Nutrition | Comments Off on Food Dyes: Are they Safe?

I have been watching the bloggers from 100 Days of Real Food and Food Babe fight for Kraft to remove food dyes from their products. I have signed the petition personally, and I encourage you to do the same! But first, check out their recent interview with Dr. Oz to learn more about how food dyes affect your body: Right now it is more about providing cheap food to the american people rather than REAL food that’s healthy and safe. Unfortunately, I don’t think that Kraft is going to change by a few hundred thousand people signing a petition. Kraft – and any other company out there! – will only change once it makes sense for them financially as a business. If everyone who signs the petition is still buying their products with dyes in it, change won’t happen....

Subway is one of the largest chain restaurant in the world. Chances are, you have probably eaten at Subway. If you are going to eat at Subway, I think it’s important to know which foods are the best or the worst. Best Food at Subway The salad  listed below is the best choice at Subway since the bread they use (even the 9 grain!) has over 50 ingredients that are not good for you (read my final thoughts below). However, I thought I’d at least provide the best sandwich that Subway has to offer. Both don’t have meat or cheese because trust me…you don’t want to have Subway’s meats or cheeses (again, read my final thoughts below in the final paragraph).
